A mother to her child in the attempt to explain death penalty.
- You see, when somebody kills someone else
the deputies will take him to jail
so that he can be executed.
- And who kills them?

In Robert Bolt's play about Sir Thomas More "A Man for All Season,"
More lets an enemy go because he has violated no laws.
His son-in-law, Roper, objects:
"I would cut down every law in England to get at the Devil."
"Oh?" More Says. "And when the last law was down,
and the Devil turned around on you,
where would you hide?"

"For those who stubbornly seek freedom, there can be no more urgent task
than to come to understand the mechanisms and practices of indoctrination.
These are easy to perceive in the totalitarian societies,
much less so in the system of 'brainwashing under freedom'
to which we are subjected
and which all too often we sere as willing or unwitting instruments."

Noam Chomsky

"An avidity to punish is always dangerous to liberty.
It leads men to stretch,
to misinterpret,
and to misapply even the best of laws.
He that would make his own liberty secure
must guard even his enemy from oppression;
for if he violates this duty
he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself."

Thomas Paine
